winning friends and...i forget the rest

so roland has asked people for their film/music/lit recommendations we feel strongly about and i am looking for an excuse to procrastinate. a perfect match!

so i started to list who has influenced me on various things, and it's all pretty much a blur, plus i felt bad because i found a bunch of stuff "on my own" (or at least with the help of Netflix), so i couldn't pin most of it down. anyway, i'm not doing that.

on to the next step, what i would force people to experience if i could...

  • Sufjan Stevens, Come On! Feel the Illinoise!, Seven Swans, Greetings from Michigan
  • Wilco, a ghost is born, Yankee Hotel Foxtroi
  • Iron & Wine, Woman King, The Creek Drank the Cradle, our endless numbered days
  • Bruce Springsteen, Devils & Dust
  • Ray LaMontagne, Trouble
  • Belle & Sebastian, The Boy with the Arab Strap
  • Amos Lee, Amos Lee
  • the collected works of Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Elvis Costello, Simon & Garfunkle, Woody Guthrie, and whoever I've forgotten
  • Woody Allen: Annie Hall, Manhattan, Play It Again Sam, Small Time Crooks
  • Ingmar Bergman: Scenes From a Marriage,
  • Jean Luc Godard: Breathless
  • F. Traffaut: the 400 Blows, Jules & Jim, the rest of the Antoine Doinel series
  • Francis Ford Coppola: The Godfather I & II
  • Orson Welles: Citizen Cane, the Third Man
  • Richard Linklater: Dazed and Confused, Waking Life, Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Tape
  • Ethan Hawke: Chelsea Walls
  • David Fincher: Fight Club
  • Doug Liman: Swingers
  • Mike Nichols: The Graduate, Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe?
  • Krystof Kieslowski: Red, White, Blue, the Decalogue
  • Michael Curtiz: Cassablanca
  • Martin Scorsese: Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Mean Streets
...ok, i'm making myself stop there...

  • Kurt Vonnegut: Slaughterhouse Five, Breakfast of Champions, Mother Night, etc.
  • Jack Kerouac: On the Road, Dharma Bums, Visions of Gerard, the Town and the City
  • Joseph Heller: Catch-22
  • Brennan Manning: the Raggamuffin Gospel, Abba Father
  • Allen Ginsberg: Howl

that's all i can think of off the top of my head...back to work

Pixel Revolt

for anyone familiar w/ MGM Endings or his other work, John Vanderslice has a new album that drops (that's what the kids call it these days) in a couple of days, i think. it's called pixel revolt and the 2 songs available at his web page are pretty cool.

researching things on the internet

from the asmatic kitty web page:

It has been reported that DC Comics sent a cease and desist letter to Asthmatic Kitty regarding Sufjan Steven's album "Illinois." Not so. Asthmatic Kitty was alerted by their own lawyers of the potential copyright infringment. Therefore, Asthmatic Kitty asked retailers not to sell Sufjan Stevens' record until the situation could be resolved. DC Comics and Asthmatic Kitty have since reached an agreement that allows Asthmatic Kitty to sell the already manufactured records with cover artwork featuring Superman. The Superman image will be removed from future pressings of the album.
